On December 18, 2017, President Donald J. Trump announced the new National Security Strategy of the United States of America.

Within the four pillars outlined in the Strategy, the future trajectory of US Asia policy featured prominently. Among the issues raised were the continuing threat posed by North Korea; the importance of working with regional allies and partners to combat and mitigate threats posed by terrorism, trafficking, and cyber warfare; the promotion of free and fair trade, including freedom of navigation; and, most importantly, a continued demonstration of US commitment to the Indo Pacific region.
